Floorstanding
Floorstanding speakers bring the scale of live music into a room, with tall cabinets that stand directly on the floor and need no stands. Audio Lounge presents floor speakers and tower speakers from Spendor, ATC, Tannoy, Focal, KEF and Rega, from slim designs for modest rooms to flagships for a dedicated listening space. Ask about an audition at the Wigmore Street showroom, where the team can advise on rooms and amplifiers.

Why Floorstanding Speakers Suit Larger Rooms
Height and cabinet volume are what set a floorstanding speaker apart from a compact design. KEF recommends floorstanding models as the best choice for larger rooms, pointing to a more expansive soundstage, more bass and the ability to handle higher volumes without risk of distortion. Because the cabinet rises from the floor, a pair needs no separate stands, and the drive units sit at the height the designer chose rather than the height of a stand.
Size need not dominate the room, however. Spendor shapes the slim A2.2 to keep music tuneful in a small room, even with the cabinets near a wall, while the Spendor Classic 200 carries two large Kevlar composite bass units and, Spendor writes, can fill even the largest listening rooms. Where space is tighter still, bookshelf speakers on rigid stands are the natural alternative, and active speakers do away with the separate amplifier.
Floorstanders from Spendor, ATC and Tannoy
Spendor builds floorstanding loudspeakers in three ranges: the slim A-Line, the D-Line, where Spendor presents the D9.2 as a full three-way design of real power and scale, and the Classic range, where the Classic 200 keeps the original Spendor cabinet style of the 1970s. Each of these models is designed and built in the UK, and standmount designs complete the wider collection of Spendor speakers.
ATC brings studio discipline to the passive tower. ATC describes the ATC SCM20PSLT as the highest performing two-way passive floorstander ATC makes, hand-built in England and suited to modestly sized rooms, while three-way towers such as the ATC SCM50PSLT add an ATC soft dome midrange between tweeter and bass driver. Active versions of several towers sit with the other ATC speakers in the brand collection.
Tannoy’s Prestige GR floorstanding hi-fi speakers, from the Tannoy Westminster Royal GR-OW to the Stirling GR, are each built around Tannoy’s Dual Concentric driver, and the complete range of Tannoy speakers includes the Stirling III LZ Special Edition, which Tannoy designs and manufactures in the UK.
Focal, KEF and Rega: Three Distinct Approaches
Focal builds floorstanders in France, from the Focal Sopra N°2, whose cabinets come from Focal’s own cabinetmakers, to the Utopia flagships. In the Grande Utopia EM Evo and the Stella Utopia EM Evo, the bass driver’s permanent magnet gives way to an electromagnet, and every Sopra and Utopia floorstander here carries a beryllium tweeter. Focal’s standmount designs join these towers in the full collection of Focal speakers.
The KEF Blade One Meta takes another route, pairing Single Apparent Source technology with four force-cancelling bass drivers, and KEF still designs and handcrafts the Blade in Maidstone. The Blade Two Meta and the Muon complete the floorstanding KEF speakers here. Rega, by contrast, spent a decade developing the Rega AYA, a medium-sized floorstander whose UK-made cabinet is moulded from glass-reinforced cement, with glass fibres that, Rega explains, reduce weight while increasing structural integrity.
Choosing the Best Floorstanding Speakers for Your Room
Start with the room, because size, furnishing and the distance to the walls shape the bass as much as any specification. Large floorstanding speakers reward a generous room and a little space behind the cabinets, while a slimmer hi-fi floorstanding speaker suits a living room shared with furniture and family. The best tower speakers for one room can be wrong for another, which is why listening in a comparable space matters more than any review.
Passive floorstanders also depend on the amplifier. An integrated amplifier or a separate power amplifier should have the authority to control large bass drivers, and speaker cables of matching quality complete the connection. Audio Lounge can suggest partners for high-end floorstanding speakers before an audition, while the full range of hi-fi speakers covers every other form, from active to wireless.
Questions About Floorstanding Speakers
What are the best floorstanding speakers for a large room?
The right pair for a large room suits the space, the amplifier and the music, so an audition counts for more than any ranking. Focal sizes the Sopra N°3 for rooms of up to 80 square metres, ATC fits the SCM300PSLT with twin 15-inch bass drivers, and Tannoy builds the Westminster Royal GR, a horn-loaded design for large rooms, around a 15-inch Dual Concentric driver. Ask Audio Lounge about a comparison in London.
Do tower speakers need a powerful amplifier?
Tower speakers need an amplifier matched to the room and to the load the speaker presents, rather than sheer power. ATC designs the SCM40 with a flat impedance curve that gives amplifiers an easy load, and the sensitivity of a pair shows how much power a given volume demands. Audio Lounge can suggest suitable amplification for your room and music, and arrange an audition of the pairing on request.
How far from the wall should floorstanding speakers stand?
There is no single distance: start with the pair a little clear of the rear wall and adjust by ear, since every move alters bass weight and imaging. Rega advises tuning the AYA by moving the cabinets relative to the rear and side walls, and trying different distances until the performance suits the room. Point the pair towards your listening seat, take time over each adjustment, or ask the Audio Lounge team to advise on positioning.
Can I audition floorstanding speakers in London?
Demonstrations take place by appointment at the Audio Lounge showroom on Wigmore Street in central London. Describe your room, your amplifier and the music you play most, and the team can suggest two or three floorstanders to compare on the same system. The team confirms which models are ready to hear when you book.
