An Open Box Pair in Satin White

This listing is for one Satin White pair of the Spendor A2 whose packaging has been opened, so the pair is sold as open box stock rather than as new. The specification table records the condition and the provenance openly. The pair is the first-generation design, on satin black plinths, and comes with the standard Spendor set: magnetic grilles, plus spike feet with a height adjustment for levelling.

The First-Generation A2 Design

Spendor conceived the A2 as a slender tower for rooms too small for a conventional floorstander. One 15cm cone of Spendor’s own EP77 polymer handles bass and midrange, and a polyamide dome with a broad surround covers the treble with even dispersion, so voices sound open and natural from most of the seats in a room. Reflex loading gives the slim enclosure more low-frequency reach than so modest a cabinet would suggest, with a warm, easy-going balance that never turns hard.

The result is a rich, warm sound that shuffles along with glee.

Satin White Against a Pale Wall

Satin White is the quietest of the A-Line finishes in a light interior. Against white or pale grey walls the two towers almost vanish, leaving the satin black plinths as the only dark note, which suits a minimal living room, a bedroom system or a study where the loudspeakers should be heard far more than seen.

Placing the Spendor A2 in a Smaller Room

Spendor shaped the voicing of the A2 around ordinary homes, where a pair often has to stand near a wall. Start with the two cabinets a couple of metres apart, turn both slightly towards the main seat, and nudge the pair forward if the bass feels heavy. Spikes level each tower on carpet or boards, while asymmetric bracing, light constrained polymer dampers and four steel stabiliser discs in the base keep the slim cabinet steady and the timing quick.

Positive Feedback

…the Spendors were very likely the most well-made loudspeakers to ever grace my listening room.

Easy to Drive, Easy to Live With

An amplifier of moderate power is enough, because Spendor made the A2 an undemanding load. A compact integrated or streaming amplifier will do, and since Spendor checks each pair’s crossovers and drive units against a broadcast reference before the cabinets are matched, the two channels balance evenly from the first note. Spendor recommends a few days of playing time before the final placement.

New Pairs and the Current A2.2

Shoppers preferring a sealed carton can choose an unopened pair of the Spendor A2 from the same generation, with a choice of Satin White or Black Oak, while the Spendor A2.2 of 2025 carries the revised interior Spendor developed since, with Sorbothane damping, retuned porting and stronger bracing. Every other tower on offer sits among the floorstanding loudspeakers at Audio Lounge.

About Spendor

Spendor began in the late 1960s with Spencer and Dorothy Hughes, and the name blends the opening syllables of Spencer and Dorothy. Before that, Spencer worked in sound engineering at the BBC, and the BC1 he designed was adopted as a monitor by broadcasters and recording studios far beyond Britain. That engineering culture has held for more than half a century: every Spendor model is designed and engineered in the UK and assembled in South Yorkshire, with drive units and cabinets made in-house rather than bought in. By Spendor’s reckoning a new model takes about a year of development and each loudspeaker around six days to make, including the hours spent pairing, staining and finishing by hand. Audio Lounge presents the Spendor loudspeakers in stock at the showroom on Wigmore Street, central London.

Questions About the Spendor A2 Open Box Pair

What is the Spendor A2 open box pair?

This listing is one Satin White pair of the Spendor A2 sold as open box stock: a two-way floorstanding loudspeaker from the first A-Line generation, and the smallest tower in that range. The packaging has been opened, so the pair cannot be sold as new. Magnetic grilles and spike feet with height adjustment come with the pair as standard.

What does the open box label mean here?

The carton has been opened before sale. The specification table records the condition as refurbished and the provenance as open box, so the listing describes the pair exactly as sold. Questions about the condition of the pair are welcome on enquiry before reserving.

Is there more than one open box pair?

Only one, in Satin White. First-generation pairs that have never been unpacked, in Satin White and Black Oak, are listed separately as the Spendor A2, and Spendor’s current model is the A2.2.

How does this pair differ from new stock?

By condition: new pairs ship in sealed cartons, while the carton of this pair has been opened. Both listings offer the first-generation design with the same drive units, cabinet and accessories, and the specification tables of the two listings carry the same figures, apart from the condition and the provenance rows.

What comes with the Spendor A2?

Spendor supplies the A2 as a pair with magnetic grilles and spike feet whose height can be adjusted, and each cabinet sits on a plinth in satin black, with four machined steel stabiliser discs fixed into the base. Connection is one pair of recessed precision binding posts on each cabinet, so a single run of speaker cable per side is all that is needed.

What warranty applies to this pair?

A five-year warranty, as the specification table lists, the same term shown for the unused first-generation pairs. The team at Audio Lounge can explain the cover in more detail on enquiry, before the pair is reserved.

Which amplifier will drive the Spendor A2 well?

Anything from 25 to 125 watts, according to Spendor, which rates the Spendor A2 as an easy load: 8 ohms nominal, dropping no further than 6.6, and 85dB sensitivity measured with one watt at one metre. A compact integrated amplifier of moderate power drives the pair comfortably, and the team can suggest a partner on enquiry.

Can this pair go close to a wall?

Yes, within reason. Spendor gave the A2 a voicing that keeps bass orderly when a pair stands by a wall or in a modest room. Set the towers a couple of metres apart, angle both gently towards the seat, then move the pair towards or away from the wall until the low end sounds balanced.

What changed between the Spendor A2 and the A2.2?

The interior. Introduced in 2025, the A2.2 keeps the size, drive units and finishes of the Spendor A2 and adds a Sorbothane damping layer, a retuned port and restructured bracing. Spendor quotes the original at 85dB and down to 36Hz, the A2.2 at 83dB and down to 46Hz. The newer design is available as the Spendor A2.2.

Can the pair be heard before collection?

Yes, on request. Reserve the pair online, then collect the pair from the Audio Lounge showroom in central London; ahead of the visit, the team can set the Spendor A2 up with an amplifier close to yours so the pair can be heard first.
