The Ruark R610 Music Console, a Music Centre Reborn

The stereo music centres of the seventies put an entire hi-fi on one piece of furniture, and a generation fell in love with records through them. The Ruark R610 Music Console carries that idea into the present: streaming, radio, television sound and a turntable input, gathered in one beautifully made console that needs only a pair of loudspeakers to become a complete system.

Ruark’s stated aim is to get people back to the joy of music. The Ruark R610 does so by clearing away the stack of boxes that so often sits between a record collection and the speakers, without surrendering the quality that made separates worth having.

Built for Natural Sound

Inside, a modern switch mode power supply feeds optimised power lines to the main board and the latest generation of digital amplifiers, which deliver 75 watts a channel. Burr-Brown converters and audio-grade parts are used throughout, and Ruark describes the result as controlled and dynamic yet above all natural, the kind of sound that makes an album easy to hear from first track to last.

A Dial Worth Turning

Ruark’s RotoDial controller first appeared in 2006, and for the 100 Series the design has been refined once more, with soft-touch buttons and a precisely weighted dial. A crisp five-inch colour screen confirms each command and shows album and station artwork. The remote is rechargeable and paired by Bluetooth, so the console responds from the sofa without any need for a clear line of sight.

Every Source Under One Lid

Spotify, TIDAL and Qobuz all run as Connect services, playing straight from the owner’s accounts, while Google Cast and Apple AirPlay welcome almost every other app. Broadcasting is covered in full, with internet radio, DAB and DAB+ and FM with RDS. Television sound arrives through HDMI with eARC, anything older connects optically, a turntable plugs into the phono stage, and compact disc joins the line-up through Ruark’s R-CD100 drive on the USB-C socket.

Choosing Loudspeakers

As a music console, the Ruark R610 leaves the choice of loudspeakers open. Ruark’s own Sabre-R bookshelf speakers are the natural partner, and the two are offered together as the Sabre-R and R610 Music System. A pair of speaker cables comes in the box, a pre-amplifier output allows a more powerful amplifier later, and a subwoofer output extends the bass.

About Ruark

Ruark has spent four decades making music easier to love. What began as a loudspeaker venture in Essex became known, from the mid-2000s, for radios and compact systems that sounded like proper hi-fi, many of them steered by the RotoDial controller. Every product is still designed, engineered and voiced by the Ruark team in Southend-on-Sea, where final tuning is decided by listening. Alan O’Rourke, who co-founded Ruark with his father Brian, still leads Ruark as Managing Director. The 100 Series takes the music centres of the seventies as inspiration, and the Ruark Audio R610 carries that thinking into a console built for separate loudspeakers. Explore Ruark’s full line-up.

Questions About the Ruark R610

What is the Ruark R610?

The Ruark R610 Music Console is a streaming amplifier and tuner from Ruark’s 100 Series, delivering 75 watts a channel into 4 ohms through digital amplification. Spotify, TIDAL and Qobuz run as Connect services, Google Cast, Apple AirPlay and Bluetooth are built in, and there are internet, DAB and FM tuners, a moving magnet phono input and HDMI eARC. A pair of passive loudspeakers completes the system.

Which loudspeakers suit the Ruark R610?

Any good passive loudspeakers suited to 75 watts a channel will work. Ruark’s own choice is the Ruark Sabre-R bookshelf pair, sold with the console as the Sabre-R and R610 Music System, and a pair of 3m speaker cables made from 400-strand oxygen-free copper is included.

Should I choose the Ruark R610 or the R710?

Pick the R710 for a slot-loading CD player, a wired 3.5mm headphone jack and far more power, 200 watts a channel into 4 ohms, in a wider cabinet. Pick the Ruark R610 for a more compact console with DAB and FM tuners, which the R710 lacks, adding CD later through the optional R-CD100.

Should I choose the Ruark R610 or the R410?

Pick the R410 for a single cabinet with loudspeakers built in. Pick the Ruark R610 to drive a separate pair of speakers: the stereo image can spread wider, any suitable loudspeaker can be chosen, and a pre-amplifier output leaves room for future upgrades.

Will the Ruark R610 work with a television?

Television sound is covered twice over: HDMI with ARC and eARC for a modern set, and an optical input that accepts PCM to 24-bit/96kHz for anything older. Bluetooth headphones can be used for private listening.

Does the Ruark R610 take a turntable and CDs?

Both are catered for. The moving magnet phono stage takes a turntable without any extra box, and the optional Ruark R-CD100 CD player connects through the USB-C port and appears as another source on the display.

Does the Ruark R610 have a subwoofer or pre-amplifier output?

Yes to both. A mono RCA subwoofer output adds an active subwoofer, and a selectable RCA line or pre-amplifier output at 2.0V can feed a recorder or a power amplifier. Tone controls cover bass and treble, with switches for loudness and Stereo+.

How much space does the Ruark R610 need?

The Ruark R610 measures H95 × W300 × D275mm without the aerial and weighs 4.3kg, so the console fits a sideboard or media unit easily. Typical power use is 10W, falling to 2W in standby with nothing plugged into the USB port.

What is a music console?

A music console is Ruark’s name for a streaming amplifier and tuner designed as a piece of furniture, in the spirit of the seventies music centre. The Ruark R610 is the 100 Series music console: sources and amplification in one cabinet, with loudspeakers chosen separately.
