Captivating Sound on a Compact Scale
The Spendor Classic 3/1 brings Spendor’s Classic sound to a compact two-way stand-mount loudspeaker, built around an 18cm bass and midrange unit of Spendor’s own making. Spendor’s goal for the model is a captivating sound with striking transparency and dynamic contrast, from a pair that is efficient, easy to drive and versatile enough for a smaller room or a place close to a wall.
Audio Lounge offers the Classic 3/1 in a choice of Cherry or Walnut real-wood veneer, always as a pair, and a demonstration at the Wigmore Street showroom can be arranged on enquiry.
An 18cm Cone Made by Spendor
Bass and midrange flow from a single 18cm drive unit that Spendor designs and manufactures in-house. The cone is formed from Spendor’s EP77 polymer, with a surround and suspension developed for the purpose, and sits in a cast magnesium alloy chassis. A high-efficiency motor drives the cone, and Spendor tunes the electro-dynamic damping and heat dissipation so the unit stays thermally and mechanically stable.
The reward is music with body and finesse together. Voices sound open and unforced, a piano keeps weight beneath every chord, and the smallest details of a recording stay intact, because Spendor voices the unit for wide dynamic ability and clean resolution at low levels.

No less impressive is the amount of fine detail that is woven into the performance.
Treble With Air and Ease
Above the cone, a polyamide dome tweeter with a wide surround carries the upper registers. That surround gives the small dome the extended reach of a compact diaphragm and the lower-frequency composure of a larger one, so the treble stays stable and clean across a very broad band, while the profile of the dome, Spendor’s own, spreads smooth, extended high frequencies widely through the room.
Cymbals shimmer without glare, the breath around a voice comes through, and the stereo picture stays settled whether the pair is heard from the middle of the sofa or from an armchair off to the side.
A Crossover That Unites Two Drivers
The crossover is where two drive units become one voice. Spendor builds the Classic 3/1 network on phase-linear principles, using precision-wound tapped inductors of high linearity, audio-grade capacitors and internal cable of silver-plated pure copper with a halogen-free dielectric. Spendor then calibrates every crossover and drive unit and pairs each against strict broadcast reference standards, so every pair leaves Spendor closely matched.
The result is a natural, coherent presentation. Singers stand firmly between the loudspeakers, instruments hold position around the voice, and even late at night, at modest volume, the music stays clear and transparent.
Easy on the Amplifier
Efficiency matters as much as refinement here. Spendor makes the Classic 3/1 easy to drive and gentle as a load, equally at home with valve or solid-state electronics and with analogue or digital sources, and the network suits every good amplifier and loudspeaker cable, so the choice of partner can follow taste rather than necessity.
That flexibility suits a system built over years: a favourite amplifier, a turntable or a streamer can all stay, and Spendor’s aim is consistent, enjoyable sound whatever feeds the pair.
Made for Smaller Rooms
Spendor describes the Classic 3/1 as a versatile stand-mount, at ease in a smaller room and in a position close to a wall. Spendor stiffens the cabinet structure and damps the panels with elastomer, so the enclosure stays silent and the music alone fills the room, and one reflex port adds depth below.
Each cabinet is made by hand, veneered in Cherry or Walnut real wood and fitted with a magnetic grille, and the restrained Classic proportions sit as naturally in a period drawing room as in a modern apartment.
The Dedicated Classic 3/1 Stand
A compact loudspeaker depends on the right height, and Spendor builds a stand specifically for the Classic 3/1, recommending the pairing for optimum results. Sold separately, the Spendor Classic 3/1 Stand places each cabinet at the height Spendor sets for the best balance from a seated listening position.
Slender columns of machined solid alloy, four to each stand and joined by two independent hubs, make a frame that is stiff, light and resonance-free, with metal meeting metal at every joint. The frame comes in satin black, topped with stainless steel supports and clear polymer discs that grip the cabinet, with adjustable spikes beneath; each stand arrives fully assembled and, like the loudspeaker, is designed and made in the UK.
The Spendor 3/1 Since 1994
The Spendor 3/1 story begins in 1994 with the SP3/1. A limited LE3/1 followed in 1996, the SP3/1P served for more than a decade, and the SP3/1R and SP3/1R2 brought further refinement before the Spendor Classic 3/1 took the name forward in 2017, built with Spendor’s newest generation of drive units.
Through every version the aim has held steady: the warmth and charm of Spendor’s loudspeakers of the 1970s, refined for modern rooms and modern recordings. Spendor calls the latest round of Classic improvements the most significant in the range’s history, so owners of an earlier SP3/1 model will find the character familiar and the performance further refined.

The result is a classic in all senses of the word.
The Spendor Classic 3/1 Among the Classics
Spendor’s Classic range gives the Spendor Classic 3/1 a smaller and a larger sibling. The Spendor Classic 4/5 is the smaller sealed design, at home on a shelf or a stand, while the Spendor Classic 2/3, the largest Classic two-way, brings a bigger bass unit and a deeper reach. Between the two, the Classic 3/1 balances bass weight against a cabinet modest enough for most rooms.
Audio Lounge’s full choice of bookshelf and standmount speakers spans every brand in the shop.
About Spendor
Spendor’s first loudspeaker, the BC1, was built at home by Spencer Hughes while he worked in BBC sound engineering, and in the late 1960s he and Dorothy Hughes set up Spendor, combining “Spen” and “Dor” in the name. The BC1 soon became a monitor trusted in broadcast and recording studios worldwide. Design, engineering and building all stay in the UK, components and cabinets are refined through in-house research and development, and every loudspeaker is assembled in South Yorkshire. Spendor holds that a great loudspeaker comes from understanding how measurements relate to what the ear hears, and from intense listening driven by a passion for music. In London, Spendor can be auditioned at Audio Lounge in Wigmore Street, and the Spendor range at Audio Lounge lists every model in stock.
Questions About the Spendor Classic 3/1
What is the Spendor Classic 3/1?
The Spendor Classic 3/1 is Spendor’s compact two-way stand-mount loudspeaker from the Classic range, supplied as a pair. Bass and midrange come from an 18cm cone of Spendor’s EP77 polymer, treble from a 22mm wide-surround polyamide dome, and both sit in a reflex-loaded cabinet damped with elastomer panels and fronted by a magnetic grille. Made in the UK in Cherry or Walnut veneer, the Classic 3/1 is designed for a dedicated Spendor stand.
What are the Spendor Classic 3/1’s key specifications?
A 22mm polyamide dome tweeter works with an 18cm EP77 polymer cone covering bass and midrange, crossing over at 3.7kHz. Spendor rates the typical in-room response of the Spendor Classic 3/1 at 40Hz to 25kHz, with 88dB sensitivity (1 watt, 1 metre) and 8 ohms nominal impedance, 5.9 at minimum. Recommended amplifier power runs from 25 to 150 watts, and power handling reaches 125 watts unclipped. Each cabinet measures 395mm high, 220mm wide and 285mm deep and weighs 9.9kg.
How does the Spendor Classic 3/1 relate to the Spendor SP3/1?
As a direct descendant. The SP3/1 introduced Spendor’s 3/1 design in 1994, and the SP3/1P, SP3/1R and SP3/1R2 refined the formula over the following two decades. The Spendor Classic 3/1 arrived in 2017 to replace the SP3/1R2, built with Spendor’s latest drive units. As no SP3/1 model remains in production, the Classic 3/1 is the Spendor 3/1 a buyer can order new today.
Which amplifiers partner the Spendor Classic 3/1 well?
Almost any good design, valve or solid-state. Spendor recommends 25 to 150 watts, and with 88dB sensitivity and an impedance that stays above 5.9 ohms from a nominal 8, the Spendor Classic 3/1 is an efficient, gentle load. Spendor’s networks are made to suit every good amplifier and loudspeaker cable. Audio Lounge can suggest pairings from the integrated amplifiers collection and demonstrate a combination before you decide.
Does the Spendor Classic 3/1 need a stand?
Yes, a dedicated stand gives the best results. Spendor builds the Spendor Classic 3/1 Stand for this model, sold separately: 575mm tall without spikes and 9kg each, on a footprint of 215mm by 273mm. Machined solid alloy pillars and two hubs form a rigid open frame in a satin black finish, topped by stainless steel supports with clear polymer discs and standing on adjustable M8 spikes. Each stand is supplied ready assembled.
Can the Spendor Classic 3/1 be placed near a wall?
Yes. Spendor designed the Spendor Classic 3/1 for smaller rooms and for positions close to walls. Spendor’s set-up guide starts with the cabinets two or three metres from each other and about as far from the seat, then has them eased away from the back wall until the bass sounds right, since nearer the wall brings more bass. A slight inward turn towards the seat tightens the stereo image, and Audio Lounge can help with a specific room.
How does the Spendor Classic 3/1 compare with the Classic 4/5 and Classic 2/3?
The Spendor Classic 3/1 is the middle choice. The Spendor Classic 4/5 is a sealed two-way with a 15cm bass unit, compact enough for a shelf, while the Spendor Classic 2/3 carries a 22cm bass unit in a larger reflex cabinet. With an 18cm cone and a reflex port, the Classic 3/1 reaches down to 40Hz against the 55Hz of the 4/5, from a cabinet well below the size of the 2/3.
Can the Spendor Classic 3/1 be bi-wired?
Yes. The terminal panel of the Spendor Classic 3/1 holds a double set of gold-plated precision binding posts, so each cabinet takes a bi-wire cable or a single run. Spendor advises a good-quality cable with high-purity conductors and low-loss insulation, and Audio Lounge can recommend cables when a pair is demonstrated or reserved.
What did reviewers make of the Spendor Classic 3/1?
High praise. Hi-Fi Choice named the Spendor Classic 3/1 the winner of a standmount group test in June 2021, and Hi-Fi News gave the Classic 3/1 an Outstanding Product award in September 2021. A quote from each review appears on this page, with a link to the full text.
Can the Spendor Classic 3/1 be heard before buying?
Yes. The Spendor Classic 3/1 is sold for collection, so a pair is reserved on the website and picked up in person at Audio Lounge in Wigmore Street, where a demonstration can be booked beforehand on request. Bring music you know well, and ask to hear the dedicated stand and a suitable amplifier during the same visit.
