A New Level of Clarity
The IE 900 features a single dynamic driver of the highest quality. The inherent compromises of multi-driver systems, such as phase issues and distortion, led to the decision for a singular dynamic driver of exceptional quality in the IE 900. To refine the sound, a system of three Helmholtz resonators, integral to the X3R technology, is incorporated into the earphone’s aluminum housing. These resonators eliminate resonance peaks, maintaining the integrity of the sound. Additionally, a complex structure in each earphone’s nozzle, termed the Vortex, manages acoustic energy to smooth out peaks.
An Acoustic Back-Volume Establishes Balance
To achieve transparent sound with balanced lows and mids, an acoustic back volume is employed. This feature, a chamber within a chamber, is tuned to control the bass lift’s slope and amplitude. This back volume contributes to a clear, natural sound signature by managing air movement through the transducer system. The result is a disciplined bass and mid-range experience, free from resonances and listening fatigue.
The Sound of Manufacturing Expertise
The IE 900 is crafted at Sennheiser’s state-of-the-art audiophile manufacturing plant in Ireland, also responsible for the HD 800S, HD 820, HD 650, and HD 600. Aluminum was chosen for its suitability for high-precision milling and aesthetic appeal. Each housing is CNC machined from a block of aluminum, resulting in a durable, wear-resistant product. During manufacturing, the drivers in each IE 900 pair are matched to ensure a gapless, transparent soundstage.
